Surface Modification of Artificial Orthopaedic Biomaterials by an Integrated Approach Combining Laser Surface Patterning and Ion Implantation
DescriptionThe acceptance of the metal-on-metal (MoM) hip bearing replacement has faced an all-time-low acceptance from the orthopaedic community recently due to unfavorable reports, even though they have significant success in terms of full-joint replacement treatments. The project aims to develop a new approach to enhance the durability of MoM artificial joints by means of applying integrated surface engineering techniques (laser patterning with ion-implantation) to bearing surfaces. We shall focus on the effect of patterning with the available fund.
