Project Details

Description

The objective of our project is to develop a leading position in the nanotwinned materials preparation for structural applications with optimized mechanical behaviors:To built up a joint research team between Hong Kong and IMR-CAS through a high level research project supported by CROUCHER Foundation; To develop new routes for forming nanotwins in different metals and alloys (for example: Cu, 301 stainless steel) through high speed or/and cryogenic dynamic plastic deformation; To understand the mechanism ofthe nucleation of nanotwins and its relation to the dynamic stress-strain history ofthe materials via experimental and numerical simulation; To disclose the strengthening and toughening mechanism ofthe nanotwins via micro mechanical experiments and numerical simulation; To develop international collaboration with worldwide leading teams (research teams of Prof. S.Suresh (Dean of School of Engineering, MIT) and Prof. R.Ritchie (Head ofDepartment of Material Science and Engineering, VC Berkeley) through joint research activities and short term academic exchange.
