Student Engagement and Learning Outcomes in Effective General Education through the Discovery-enriched Curriculum

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

"The present study aims at examining the educational experience of undergraduate students by overall program features (discovery-enriched curriculum and general education) and student-learning outcomes after the higher education system has changed from three-year system to four-year system since 2012. Given this enormous curriculum change, it is hypothesized that student engagement and learning outcomes will be significantly higher in classes with more DEC and GE after controlling for entrance scores and family backgrounds. Variables may include adherence to DEC & GE, attitude towards global competence, academic engagement, emotional engagement, social/community engagement, academic performance, creativity, and etc. It will look into the effectiveness of how DEC & GE features can be integrated into classrooms that engage learners, encourage creative self-efficacy and enhance global competence. This project will involve approximately 800 undergraduate students from at least 3 colleges and across 4 years in 2014-16 including 600 students in a cross-sectional study and 200 students who have overseas experience and have taken part in the previous longitudinal study.
