Description

Aquaponics, a combination of fish and plant production using aquaculture and hydroponics systems, represents a new direction in the development of the agriculture and fisheries sector in Hong Kong. Although nitrate produced in aquaponic system is a natural nutrient to plants, high nitrate levels in aquaponic water would lead to high nitrate concentration in plants. Because excessive intake of nitrate can increase the odds of getting cancer, there are great demands of rapid, reliable, and low-cost nitrate detection methods for monitoring aquaponic water. However, many prevailing fast nitrate detection methods cannot give reliable results in aquaponic water testing due to the complexity of the water content. Moreover, many of these nitrate tests have to be performed by well-trained technicians in laboratories, which put a heavy burden on the cost of operating a commercial aquaponic farm. In this proposal, we propose to develop a rapid, reliable and convenient nitrate detection method on the basis of a fast and selective nitrosonium insertion reaction we discovered. This quick nitrate test not only can meet the needs of the agriculture and fisheries sector, but also gives a positive impact on the development of the agriculture, fisheries, environmental protection, and food safety-related industries.
