Quantum Design of Magnetic and Superconducting States in Correlated Infinite-Layer Nickelates

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The emergence of superconductivity in infinite-layer (IL) nickelates has reignited fundamental questions regarding the nature of correlated electrons and high‑temperature superconductivity. These nickelates host NiO2 planes analogous to those in cuprates but embed itinerant rare-earth 5d bands, producing a complex multiband environment where magnetism, orbital physics, and superconductivity compete. Through precise epitaxial growth and topochemical tuning, unprecedented control over the valence, dimensionality, and magnetism of the NiO2 planes has become possible. This project aims to establish quantum-design principles governing the coexistence and interaction between magnetic and superconducting states in correlated infinite-layer nickelates. Three tightly connected aims are pursued: (1) controlling lattice dimensionality and A-site chemistry to enhance the pairing strength and stabilise new quantum phases; (2) investigating magnetism-superconductivity interplay via rare-earth-driven exchange coupling and high-field re-entrant phases; and (3) mapping the complete electron-hole-doped phase diagram to identify mechanisms of correlation-driven superconductivity. Combining epitaxial thin-film synthesis, high-field transport, synchrotron spectroscopy, and ab initio theory, this work will illuminate the microscopic interactions underpinning superconductivity and magnetism, while strengthening Hong Kong’s international profile in quantum oxide research.
