Planning and Management of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Delivery Services and Rapid Response in Urban Airspace

With Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technologies maturing, UAV-based parcel delivery service and rapid response will be an important component of resilient logistic service in the near future, e.g., shipping test samples and medical supplies between hospitals and communities, delivering goods to inaccessible areas, providing AED or other emergency service, etc. Yet, to realize such a drone logistic system, a key challenge lies in the planning and management of a large number of drone operations in high-density urban environment, which requires an interdisciplinary effort, drawing expertise from UAV path planning and control, air traffic management, operations management, and urban built environment modelling. In this project, we aim to develop planning and management methods for UAV operations in highdensity urban environment. A combination of expertise in the field of aerospace engineering, data science, and operations research will be employed to address the challenges contributing to intelligent logistics and smart city development.
