Description

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), capable of repelling both water and oil, have been manufactured for more than 50 years and are widely used in industries, particularly in the manufacture of electronic and textile products. Many PFCs and their derivatives are persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative. As a result of the rapid industrial development in China in the past decades, the manufacturing processes of electronic/electric and plastic goods, as well as wastes arising from the disposal of used/obsolete electronic and plastic products, are becoming important sources of many environmental contaminants, including PFCs. Despite this, there is little information regarding the contamination status of PFCs in China, and there is no established analytical method for measuring PFCs in China. This study mainly aims to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the analysis of PFCs in commercial/consumer products in China. This will be of benefit to industries in China as importers of Chinese products in Europe and North America are increasingly demanding that all imported goods be tested for potentially toxic substances, including PFCs. The establishment of analytical methods for PFCs in China will also help to provide the necessary technologies for assessing the potential risks of these chemicals to Chinese consumers. Efforts will be made to explore the possible use of other compounds as alternatives to PFCs.
