Path Planning for Cooperative Drones: Coverage and Connectivity
DescriptionIn recent years, civil and commercial unmanned aerial vehicles (a.k.a. drones) have attracted significant attention because of their potential in many applications. While some of these applications only need a single drone, many important applications call for a fleet of drones working together for faster task execution and extended surveillance coverage. To effectively coordinate a fleet of drones working on a common task, we will focus on path planning, i.e., specifying a path for each drone to fly through, with the consideration of both field coverage and network connectivity. Particularly, we will develop path planning solutions where drones need to survey a field with a given deadline in one round trip. To validate the path planning solutions, we will build a testbed and study more implementation details including mapping a path plan to trajectory with smooth turns and adjusting directional antennae for the bestcommunication performance.
