On-line Support for Academic Writing for the Engineering Curriculum

This proposal seeks funding for the development of an online resource bank of English language materials for post-graduate students in the Engineering disciplines in order for them to gain a better understanding of the very specific requirements for their fields and to become more proficient in their writing. The collaborating institutions (CityU, PolyU and HKU) involved in this project proposal have identified a need to support the UGC-funded post-graduate (PG) students in the Engineering disciplines in academic writing. Post-graduate students who are faced with unfamiliar academic demands are usually expected to be able to deal with these challenges on their own. These demands may become excessive for learners who are second language speakers of English and for faculty members who have to cater for the needs of the growing population of international students whose cultural and academic backgrounds and rhetorical styles vary considerably. In addition, the institutions have found there be insufficient specific support for these students.
