Molecule-based Magnetic Materials Constructed from New Cyanoruthenium and Cyanoosmium Building Blocks

DescriptionThis project is concerned with the synthesis of molecule-based magnetic materials based on a new paramagnetic cyanoruthenium(III) and a new paramagnetic cyanoosmium(III) building block. Molecule-based magnetic materials have received much attention in recent years by researchers in the fields of chemistry, physics, and materials science because of the discovery of high Tc and high coercivity ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic behaviour, and various new physical phenomena associated with these materials. These materials may also provide the basis for new or improved magnetic applications or devices. In this project a new dicyanoruthenium(III) complex containing picolinate ligands and a new cyanoosmium(III) complex containing a novel salen ligand will be synthesized. These complexes will be treated with various paramagnetic metal ions to produce clusters, one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional materials. The structures and magnetic properties of these materials will be investigated. These studies should contribute to the development of new molecule-based magnetic materials and devices.
