Description

Oil spill has become a major environmental concern nowadays, posing severe threats to human society. Hong Kong, one of the most densely populated places in the world and possessing rich marine resources, can barely undertake any risk of environmental damages caused by large-scale oil spills no matter on land or at sea. The proposed project aims to provide an integrated solution to oilspills, specifically in the aspect of the clean-up process. We will synthesize magnetic responsive nanoparticle-surfactants (NPSs) as next-generation dispersants, fabricate PEG-based polymer membranes for water-oil separation, finally produce a prototype of the integrated oil spill clean-up processing unit. The recyclability of magnetic responsive NPS-based surfactants, as well as the highflux of PEG-based polymer membranes, endows our approach with the capability for continuous oil spill clean-up. We believe the successful implementation of the proposed project will provide an effective and efficient oil spill clean-up solution to secure a clean Hong Kong.
