From Fog to Electricity and Clean Water: Development of A Fog-based Self-Powered System (FSS) in Hong Kong

Description

In order to make full use of the ubiquitous fog energy, for the first time, we establish a large scale fog-based self-powered system (FSS) combining freshwater harvesting and power generation, which are envisioned to supply power for portable devices/ road illumination in remote mountains/coastal regions and at the same time provide freshwater for agricultural irrigation and domestic use. Our invention shows the highest fog-based energy-conversion efficiency reported to date with important application to energy harvesting for remote applications. Our demonstrations not only set a world record of the high-power droplet-based output, but also, most importantly, pave a new way for using FSS system to power remote electrical appliances and subsequently realize the 'off-the-grid' concept. The zero-emission characteristic of the FSS system is also perfectly in line with Hong Kong SARGovernment's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
