Empowering Team-based Learning via Generative AI Technology
Project: Research
Description
Team-based learning has emerged as an innovative teaching methodology that shifts the focus from traditional lecturing to an active and collaborative learning environment. Rather than passively receiving information, students work in groups to tackle real-world problems and challenges. This approach fosters critical thinking, communication, and teamwork - essential skills for success in the modern workforce. However, the limited classroom time available for team-based learning sessions can constrain the scope and sophistication of the projects that students are able to undertake. The fast-growing generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology presents an opportunity to empower and enhance team-based learning. Generative AI tools can augment student productivity and enable them to tackle more complex tasks within the confines of the classroom schedule. By leveraging AI for coding, data analysis, report writing, slide creation, and other key activities, students can devote more time to understanding concepts, exchanging ideas, and collaborating with their peers. This teaching proposal outlines a framework for incorporating generative AI into team-based learning environments. The goal is to provide students with access to powerful AI assistants that can handle the more mundane, time-consuming aspects of project work, allowing them to focus on higher-order thinking and collaborative problem-solving. In this approach, students would be introduced to generative AI tools and guided on how to effectively utilize them within the team-based learning context. For example, students could use language models to rapidly generate initial drafts of reports or presentations, freeing up time for iterative refinement and group discussion. Similarly, code generation tools could expedite the prototyping and implementation of Ultimately, this teaching proposal seeks to unlock the full potential of team-based learning byintegrating generative AI technology. By empowering students with AI-assisted tools, lecturers can create a more engaging, innovative, and effective learning environment for challenging tasks. This, in turn, will help students develop the critical skills and capabilities required to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven world. software solutions, enabling teams to tackle more ambitious projects.Detail(s)
