Project Details

Description

Photoactive semiconductors are promising candidates for harnessing solar energy. A number of potentially impactful photoactive materials are currently suffering from photo-dissolution, thus hindering their practical applications. In addition to the design of novel photoactive materials, this project aims to develop innovative materials engineering methods to suppress the intrinsic instability of such materials, especially through the surface/interface engineering of the photocatalysts and its reactive media. Attaining fundamental knowledge on charge interaction at electrolyte-semiconductor interfaces will be crucial in developing the next generation of highly efficient photochemical systems in solar fuels applications. The ultimate goal in converting and storing solar energy is achievable through careful design of photoactive semiconductor with promising robustness and efficiency. Given the strategic solar-geographical position of Hong Kong, utilisation of sunlight is a promising option in renewable energy resources to tackle the issue of energy insecurity.
