Developing Liquid Diode Based Medical Tube
DescriptionMedical tube is a common medical consumable in hospital but suffers from the limitation of the infusion reflux and bubble formation, which causes many medical accidents in the worldwide. In this project, we propose to manufacture the diode tube that imparts directional liquid transport to prevent the existence of reflux and bubbles during the infusion of medical solutions. We first seek the appropriate structure that is capable of transporting various liquids in a single direction on the membrane and within the tube, both of which are fabricated by polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). The transport performance is further quantified by some figures of merits, including rectification coefficient, velocity, and transport distance, as well as bubble number. If successful, the project will open up a new avenue to design novel medical tube with advanced functionalities, but also find a wide range of applications such as in medical materials and devices, water harvest, and lab on a chip system.
