Civil Society Alliances in Hong Kong: The Case of the Save Our Country Parks Alliance
DescriptionAs Hong Kong's country parks have come under threat, environmental activists have organized a campaign to protect this natural treasure that distinguishes the city from other global cities. NGOs have cooperated in a joint-movement called the Save Our Country Parks Alliance. While they have been active in opposing development in village enclaves and against the chipping off of parts of country park land, very little is known about this civil society alliance and its ability to influence the government Based on comparative research on civil society cooperations in other countries, this project seeks to determine the organizational capacity and the strategies of this collaboration and the response from the government as well as development advocates. As Hong Kong faces a housing shortage and powerful rural interest groups and developers are aligned with decision-makers, environmental activists face an uphill battle.
