Description

Dental health has heavy impact on people’s food and nutrition intake, and therefore influences people’s general health. However, the level of dental care is very low in Hong Kong. This raises many dental related health problems. Partial tooth loss happens in people of all ages. Rebuild of dental crown is an essential procedure to restore the functionality of the lost teeth. However, synthetic dental crowns have high rate of failure which stimulates the research efforts to develop crack-resistant dental crown in recent decades. The proposed project is aimed to develop a better design of synthetic dental crown inspired by the magnificent structure of the natural teeth. The fatigue and fracture mechanism of the proposed dental design will be examined both experimentally and computationally/ analytically. Nano size ceramic particles will be utilized to increase the strength and fracture toughness of bio-inspired dental materials studied in the proposed project.
