Aquatic Animal Health Assessment - RMGS

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Indo-Pacific finless porpoise and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin are the 2 resident cetacean species of Hong Kong, while 5 out of 7 sea turtle species has also been found in Hong Kong waters. They are all highly susceptible to various natural and human-related stressors, such as infectious diseases, vessel and fishery interactions. This project aims to define and quantify the key threats contributing to the morbidity and mortality of stranded cetaceans and sea turtles through the established virtopsy-driven stranding postmortem investigation programme, for investigating their biological health and profiles. This project will also provide a sound scientific basis for conservation policy and management decisions in an one health prospective. Various outreach events will also be organized to promote the aquatic animal, marine conservation and the one health concept to the general public.
