Project Details

Description

The objective of this research is to measure aerosol profiles in Hong Kong using a Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) system. The different components to build a Lidar system are available at CityU and the main objective is to assemble this instrument system and develop retrieval algorithms. The source for aerosols particles can be natural, e.g. deserts, volcanoes or sea spray, or anthropogenic, e.g. traffic or power plant emissions. It is expected that the proposed measurement results will contribute to a better understanding of human activities on air quality in Hong Kong.Furthermore, the measured aerosol profiles complement the aerosol volume spectra measurements at CityU as the aerosol composition provides signatures of maritime, continental and urban aerosols measured over Hong Kong, and in combination with profile measurements allows for the identification of source regions.
