Description
The Teaching Development Grant Abstract Narratives explores novel ways of conceptualisingnarrative and meaning through abstract moving image. It is rooted in the PI's artistic practice innarrative-infused abstract animation. The Co-I's experience with SM2202 Micro-Narrativesprovides added rigour regarding methodologies and techniques of creating meaning throughstructural moving image methods that seek to discover new potentials of a shot. Teaching will bedelivered by the PI through the new undergraduate course SM2717 Abstract and ExperimentalAnimation. The findings of this project will form the basis of a scholarly paper for publication in apeer-reviewed academic journal, and all artworks will be presented in screenings, archived on awebsite, and submitted to international film, animation and media art festivals. This TDG projectleads to the creation of new knowledge and artworks through interdisciplinary research into thenarrative potential of the abstract moving image. It teaches students to think as artists whocontribute to, and directly shape, an international moving image culture. Film festival participationraises the profile not just of our students, but of the School of Creative Media and City University ofHong Kong as a whole. The Co-I has been a devoted advocate of moving image experiments withinthe local art community, frequently speaking on related topics, as well as writing about the localvideo art history and the actual practices among young practitioners. This would ensure the resultingcreative works to be thoroughly discussed at a local level, to extend Hong Kong image-making tothe next phase of discovery.Detail(s)
