Description

Reserve capacity has been developed as a design objective for signal-controlled junctions serving as a performance measure indicating the overall acceptability of the signal timing design. It dedicates the maximum amount of flow that can enter the signal-controlled system without exceeding the capacity limit. Relevant design procedures for optimizing the reserve capacity are listed in various codes of practice. The reserve capacity is a simple and easily understood by practitioners. A positive reserve capacity means that there is a flow buffer and more traffic can be accommodated. Chance of overflow and overflowing delay can be reduced. Apart from traffic signal designs, the concept of reserve capacity optimization can also be found in roundabouts, priority junctions, signal-controlled networks, and road networks with traveler information available.
