Description
This project seeks to reassess the complex process of reconstructing the literary field in Northeastern China within the shadow of the Chinese civil war and early Cold War conditions. Following the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the Communist Party (CCP) and the Kuomintang (KMT) established bases in the Northeast, leading to a standoff. The situation was further complicated by the involvement of the United States and the Soviet Union. Both parties prioritized cultural work as a tool for political struggle. The KMT and CCP, based in Shenyang and Harbin respectively, established unique cultural production systems in the Northeast region therefore.Informed by Bourdieu’s concept of “field,” or the Chinese term Wentan, this project focuses on the social units that defined the writers in the Northeast region. Four types of writers were significant and interacted within this literary field: former "Manchukuo" writers, the "Northeast Writers Group" returning from China proper, Yan’an writers and Nationalist writers who accompanied the two parties' armies to the Northeast region. The post-war Northeast literary scene can be seen as the interplay of these four types of writers within the emerging literary systems of the two parties. The KMT sought to reintegrate the borderlands into the central order, while the CCP dealt with the clash and adjustment of the Yan'an literary system with the experiences in the new region. The establishment of these cultural systems also determined the inclusion orexclusion of Manchukuo writers within each political power. The reconstruction of the post-war literary field in Northeastern China remains an underexplored academic area. Unlike existing research that primarily focuses on the Chinese Communist Party and the liberated areas, this project aims to consider the experiences of the KMT, the CCP, and local Manchurian writers to present a comprehensive picture. This project intersects with Yan’an studies, KMT literature studies, "Manchukuo" studies, and research on the "Northeast Writers Group," and in turn will help deepen the understanding of the aforementioned four research areas. Additionally, this project will also help understand the literary experiences of other regions in China during the civil war period and shed lights on the post-war literary experiences in other Cold War frontline regions of Eurasia.Detail(s)
