Description
This year’s Research Impact Award wass given to Daniel Howe for his achievement in research impact which was recognized by SCM in the selection of his research as an impact case in RAE 2020. Daniel’s research explores the influence computation exerts on core human values such as creativity, autonomy, and privacy. His projects have had extensive impact of three main kinds: First, the software Howe has created to combat online surveillance have been downloaded by more than 1.5 million members of the general public; second, his educational open-source toolkit for creative programming has been deployed by educational institutions in at least 15 countries; and, third, Howe’s research methodology, “Values-In-Design,” has been adopted by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), and his strategy, “privacy via obfuscation,” has developed into an active subfield of Computer Science research.
