Biography

Dr. Nicky Lam is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Energy and Environment in City University of Hong Kong. Before he joined CityU, he was a Post-doctoral Research Associate in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in the U.S.A. He has been a trainer for climate and air quality models in the past few years for various government agencies, including Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department (HKEPD) and Asia Center for Air Pollution Research (ACAP). He involved a variety of air quality researches including ambient air quality sampling, permitting, emission inventory development and future climate change modeling.

Dr. Lam has published several peer-reviewed publications with focuses on long-range transport of air pollutants, and regional climate and air quality modeling in 2010-2011.

Research Assistant/Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of climate change and air quality at School of Energy and Environment

  • Duties
    The appointee will conduct regional climate and air quality related research. Model training and professional development will be provided to the successful candidate.

  • Requirements
    A recent bachelor's or master's degree in environmental engineering/meteorology or a related discipline. Candidates are required to have some levels of Linux and programming experience. Experience in FORTRAN and Shell Scripting is preferred.

  • Salary and Conditions of Service
    Salary offered will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include leave, medical and dental consultations at the campus clinic.

Research Interests/Areas

Regional/local air pollution modeling

Use state-of-the-art air quality models, CMAQ and CAMx, to assess air quality in PRD/Hong Kong.
Resolve emerging issue in air quality through advanced modeling.

  • Tropospheric outflow of air pollution through monsoon climates

  • Investigate transport of air pollutants using GEOS-Chem global chemistry model.

  • Intercontinental long-range transport of air pollution 

  • Examine effects of long-range transport of air pollutants and its source and sink under HTAP scenarios.

  • Impacts of stratospheric intrusion on surface ozone

  • Study ozone intrusion mechanism and how it contributes to overall background ozone on the surface.

  • Effects of future climate change on energy production, water supply and air quality using dynamical and statistical downscaling approaches

  • Apply advanced climate and air quality models (i.e., CESM and WRF) to investigate the impacts of climate change for government policy support.

  • Air quality impacts on alternative energy scenarios in Asia

  • Develop emission estimation and emission inventory for alternative energy scenarios.
