Biography

Eddie obtained a PhD in Architecture at University of Cambridge in 2024, with a thesis focusing on the potentiality of flexible working among architectural professionals. He joined CityU in November 2024 as an assistant professor. His research spans across Urban Studies, Economic Geography, and Architecture. 

Before Cambridge, Eddie received his Master in City Planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2019), with a design thesis exploring the form of a live/work community under autonomous driving and flexible working; and Master of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis (2014), with a degree project transforming a conventional American parking lot into a fine-grained community for creative professionals.

Eddie used to be an architect in New York City and Kansas City, engaging in design from the scale of furniture to that of cities. Featured projects include New York Public Library and the Golden State Warrior Arena. He also worked as a research assistant at MIT’s Senseable City Lab during which he explored wireless charging schemes for the autonomous boats in the canals of Amsterdam.

Position(s) Available

I am seeking researchers to explore the emerging spatialities of flexible working, currently focusing on office dynamics of creative workers and geography of creative industries. We adopt mixed research methods and an interdisciplinary approach, spanning topics in Economic Geography, Urban Planning and Design, and Environment-Behaviour Studies. Applicants with other interesting ideas are also welcome to discuss with me.

Requirements

- Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Statistics/Data Science, Economics, Architecture, or related fields.

- English proficiency required by CityU. I personally expect a much higher English level, as this is vital for a fruitful interaction with research communities around the globe.

- Preference will be given to applicants who have:

  1. Bachelor’s degrees with high GPA from 985 universities in China, or QS world top 100 universities;
  2. Experience in quantitative data analytics and programming languages (e.g. Python, R, Stata, MATLAB etc.)
  3. High-quality (Q1) journal publication with first or corresponding authorship.

- Requirements for Postdoc and RA are slightly different from the above. Happy to discuss with you.
