Biography

Xiaolong Ma is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. He holds a PhD (2016) in materials science, an MA (2016) in statistics from North Carolina State University, and a BS (2011) in materials science from Zhejiang University. He received his postdoc training at Johns Hopkins University and Texas A&M University. Before joining CityU, he worked at Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a Materials Scientist from 2019 to 2022.

Research Interests/Areas

Dr. Ma’s research focuses on the mechanism-driven design of advanced structural materials with superior properties. His current research focus areas include understanding mechanical behaviors of metals at the small scale using advanced electron microscopy and strengthening in magnesium alloys through non-equilibrium processing. Dr. Ma has published over 60 research papers on metals and alloys research in respected journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Acta Materialia, Materials Research Letters and Scripta Materialia.
