Biography

Dr. Nelson W.Y. Tam, Registered Social Worker (RSW), earned his Ph.D. from the City University of Hong Kong. Prior to this, he completed a Master of Social Sciences in Behavioral Health and a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Tam currently serves as a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong. Before transitioning to academia, he accumulated nearly 20 years of social work experience, specializing in work with children, adolescents, and families.

Dr. Tam integrates principles and techniques from various counselling orientations in his clinical practice. He has received training in Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy (STST), Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF), the Body-Mind-Spirit (BMS) approach, Self-Compassion in Psychotherapy (SCIP), and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT). He is a Certified Facilitator of Compassionate Mind Training (CMT) and a Certified Mindfulness Teacher through the Awareness Training Institute and the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Tam’s primary research areas include mental health issues, such as depression and suicidal ideation, as well as overall well-being. His research has been presented at international conferences both locally and abroad and published in international journals.

In 2023-2024, Dr. Tam was awarded a Teaching and Development Grant to explore the application of AI-based chatbots, such as ChatGPT, and e-learning tools to enhance social work casework education in teaching and learning.
