Edmund W. Cheng is a Professor in the Department of Public and International Affairs at the City University of Hong Kong, where he co-directs the Centre for Public Affairs and Law, the Political Analysis Lab, and the Advanced Methods School at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
Cheng’s research interests include political sociology, digital governance, public opinion, science of science, and research methodology, focusing on the comparative study of Asia. His work has appeared in Perspectives on Politics, Political Communication, Political Studies, Political Psychology, Governance, British Journal of Social Psychology, Sociological Methodology, Information, Communication & Society, New Media & Society, Computer in Human Behaviour, China Quarterly, China Journal, Journal of Contemporary Asia and Modern Asian Studies.
His research has been supported by the American Political Science Association, Central Policy Unit, French National Research Agency, Hong Kong Research Grants Council, Hong Kong University Grants Commission, and Policy Innovation and Coordination Office. His findings or commentaries have been cited in international, national, and local media.
He serves as co-editor or editorial board member of several leading SSCI journals in political science, science, sociology and area studies. He received the Gordon White Prize from the China Quarterly in 2016 and has been listed as Top 2% scientists in the world by the Stanford/Elsevier List from 2020 to 2024, ranking Top 30 in cultural studies worldwide and Top 20 in political science and public administration in the Greater China Region.
Cheng received his PhD in Government from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2015. Prior to joining City University, he worked at Hong Kong Baptist University and the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China. He has held visiting positions at the University of Oxford and the Australian National University.
