Biography

Denvid is currently a full professor at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and the Associate Director of CityUHK Academy of Innovation. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Civil Engineering with first class honors and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and got his second Master degree from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He then received his Ph.D. in the field of structures and materials from MIT in 2012. Prior to joining CityUHK as an assistant professor in 2012, he worked as a postdoctoral associate at MIT. From January to July 2020, he was a visiting professor at MIT CEE. Denvid’s research interests encompass nano and multifunctional materials used for construction, sustainable materials, green concrete, machine leaning assisted multiscale modeling and nondestructive evaluations.  He has published more than 200 referred journal and conference articles and has delivered more than 40 invited talks, which include plenary and keynote speeches in international conferences.  As the principal investigator, he has secured a number of research funds from various agencies including Hong Kong General Research Fund, Hong Kong Innovation Technology Fund, Croucher Foundation, Environmental Conservation Fund and Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission.  Denvid actively contributes his service and leadership to international and domestic technical communities.  He has been serving SPIE Smart Structures/NDE since 2014 as the conference program committee member and International Conference on Composites or Nano Engineering (ICCE) as the Symposium Chair.  He has been serving in the Technical Committee on the Code of Practice for Structural Use of Concrete, HKSAR from 2017-2023 and the Technical Committee on the Code of Practice for Precast Concrete Construction, HKSAR since 2021.  He is a Fellow of SPIE and a Member of ASCE, HKIE and IEEE.  Currently, he is the Associate Editor in the Journal of Building Engineering and has been the leading guest editor of the special issue called “Construction materials functionalized in energy storage and harvesting” listed in this journal.  He has been serving in several international SCI journals including Composites Part B: Engineering, Nanotechnology Reviews, and Nonlinear Engineering as an Editorial Board Member.  Since 2018, Denvid has been nominated and selected as a Founding Member of the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences (YASHK).  He has received one of The President's Awards from CityU, in recognition of his remarkable academic achievement.  Denvid has been granted the 2020 Outstanding Supervisor Award from CityU in view of his excellent research supervision towards Ph.D. students.  Recently, Denvid has been awarded the 2022 Outstanding Teaching Award from the College of Engineering.
