Biography

Prof. Nelson Sze-Chun Chan received the B.Eng. degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China, in 2001, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2004 and 2007, respectively. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves at the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China. From 2016 to 2022, he served in the Department of Electrical Engineering as Assistant/Associate Head.

Prof. Chan received the Prof. Bor-Uei Chen Scholarship of the Photonics Society of Chinese-Americans in 2007, the departmental Outstanding Teacher Awards in 2009-2014, and Outstanding Reviewer Award from IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics in 2021. He served as a Guest Associate Editor of International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos since 2010, a Guest Editor of IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics (Issue on Semiconductor Lasers) in 2013, and a Feature Editor of Optics Express (Issue on Physics and Applications of Laser Dynamics) in 2018. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

His research interests include nonlinear dynamics of semiconductor lasers, optical chaos generation, radio-over-fiber, and photonic microwave generation. Some information on the research is reported in the following SPIE Newsroom article: http://spie.org/x119677.xml
