Biography

Prof. Surya Paudel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health, City University of Hong Kong. He is a veterinarian with a PhD in poultry medicine from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Austria, and a Diplomate of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Science/ European Board of Veterinary Specialization.

Previously, Prof. Paudel worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Clinic for Poultry and Fish Medicine (ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory) at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. He also completed an externship at the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center, University of Georgia. With over a decade of diverse experience in poultry medicine across Europe, the USA and Asia, his expertise encompasses infection biology of poultry pathogens, vaccine development, immune responses, gut health and diagnostics. Additionally, his work experience also includes conservation and management of critically endangered wildlife species in restoring the natural population of dramatically declining vultures in Southeast Asia.

Prof. Paudel has served on the methodology task force for drafting the “Veterinary Guidelines on Antimicrobial Use in Poultry Colibacillosis” within the European Network for Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Treatment (ENOVAT) programme. He also led a joint collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations to develop a successful irradiated vaccine against avian pathogenic Escherichia coli suitable for mass aerosol vaccination.

Prof. Paudel is keen on expanding the possible collaboration with colleagues from academics, industries and government agencies in the field of poultry health, food safety and sustainable poultry farming.

Research Interests/Areas

Surya Paudel is interested in research and teaching works related to all aspects of poultry health, especially in understanding host-pathogen interaction, immune response towards infections, epidemiology and prevention of diseases as well as food safety and one health.
