Biography

Dr. Kimburley Choi is Associate Professor of the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong. As an interdisciplinary scholar conducting research on cultural reproduction and changes, my research employs contemporary debates in cultural studies and sociology to explore socio-cultural material arenas in relation to identity and power.

My contextual study of the (re)production of Hong Kong culture can be summarized in two areas: (visual) ethnographic study of everyday discursive-material practices, as well as representation, culture, and politics. I am the author of articles in Qualitative Research, Urban Studies, Journal of Consumer Culture, Ethnography, Cultural Studies Review, Childhood, Social Semiotics, book chapters published by the Oxford University Press, Wiley-Blackwell publishing and others, and the digital media journal ASPECT: The Chronicle of New Media Art. I am also the editor of the book World Film Locations: Hong Kong (2013). I was selected by the Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University as “Early Career Researcher” and became the visiting fellow there. I serve as reviewer of journals such as Journal of Consumer Culture, Sociology of Education and Tourism Geographies, etc. I am also invited as Professional Adjudicator of the Hong Kong Film Awards Association and Examiner of Hong Kong Arts Development Council (film and media arts; arts education; arts criticism).
