Biography

Professor Steagall earned his DVM and completed a residency at Sao Paulo State University (UNESP-Botucatu), Brazil, then completed a Ms and PhD in Anaesthesiology with emphasis on feline analgesia at the same institution. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) and a De Facto Diplomate of the Asian College of Veterinary Surgeons (AiCVS). Professor Steagall worked for several years as a Professor of Veterinary Anaesthesiology and Pain Management at the Universite de Montreal, Canada leading a research laboratory dedicated to improving the standards of pain management in animals with a strong benefit to animal welfare. His world-class laboratory developed and validated the Feline Grimace Scale, a tool that uses changes in facial expressions to assess acute pain in cats (www.felinegrimacescale.com and FGS phone application for Android, Huawei and iOS). He is the co-chair of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Pain Committee and Scientific Advisor for the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA). With vast international collaborations and an extensive professional network, he has published over 155 peer-review manuscripts on pain management mostly in cats and the book "Feline Anesthesia and Pain Management" while lecturing internationally. Professor Steagall is a Stanford's top 2% most highly cited scientist in 2022 and 2023.

Professor Steagall joined the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) and Centre for Animal Health and Welfare at the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, City University of Hong Kong in January 2022. He is the past Head of VCS.
