I am seeking highly motivated Ph.D. students to join my research group in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. The research will fall within the topic of tropical cyclone risk assessment. Of particular interests are tropical cyclone rainfall mechanisms, inland flooding, topographic effect, eyewall replacement and rapid intensification. I am open to other tropical cyclone related topics and encourage all qualified applicants to contact me at [email protected]

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have Bachelor or Master degree (before PhD entrance) in an engineering field, geography, atmospheric or climate-related science, applied statistics or math.
  • For students from non-English speaking institutions, CityU requires proof of English proficiency obtained within last two years (minimum score of 79 in TOEFL, 6.5 in IELTS or 490 in CET Band 6 may be accepted).
  • Candidates with experience in modeling tropical cyclones using WRF are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Candidates with experience in tropical cyclone dynamics or mesoscale dynamics are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Candidates with good knowledge of computer programming (in particular Matlab) and experience in processing and analyzing large data sets and model outputs are strongly encouraged to apply.

Benefits

  • standard stipend of HK$17,510 (~US$2,240) per month
  • Our research group will willingly cover the expenses of conferences or other research activities. CityU also offers additional student grant, fund and fellowship based on academic / research performance.
  • Hong Kong government provides PhD fellowships to ~300 students every year, with stipend of HK$27,600 (~US$ 3,530) per month. It's highly competitive though. I would recommend students with very good academic backgrounds to apply.
