Biography
As a teenager, (Joe) Nan Zhou could not complete his high school education during the Cultural Revolution. He worked as an "intellectual youth" in the farm for almost 6 years and an apprentice carpenter for about one year. Later, he studied at Fuzhou University as a "worker-peasant-soldier" student and graduated (without a degree). Luckily, he passed a national examination for overseas graduate study organized by the Ministry of Education in 1981. As a result, he earned a MBA from Idaho State University in 1984 and a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a major in marketing from University of Utah in 1987. In 1994, he took his sabbatical leave from Acadia University in Canada. He came to City University of Hong Kong. He fell in love with the place and decided to stay. A founding member of the Marketing Department, he served as Acting Head/Head from August 1997 to March 2009. He is a leading scholar in China marketing. In 2003-4, he received the only grant in the Management Science category of the prestigious NSFC-HKRGC Joint Research Grant Scheme for that year. In 2008, at Wuhan University, he was appointed Changjiang Scholar Chair Professor in the area of Qi Ye Guan Li (Enterprise Management) by the Ministry of Education of China. He was then the only professor to be appointed in this area since the launch of the Changjiang Scholar program in 1998. He completed his first full marathon after turning 51 years old, and is an honorary manager of the cross-country team at City University of Hong Kong.
周南教授,男,1952年生,福建古田人,念过中学但没毕业 (文革中插队近六年后做木工学徒近一年),也上过大学但没学位(1978 年毕业于福州大学工业与民用建筑专业),1981年考上教育部出国研究生,1984年获爱达荷州立大学MBA学位,1987年获犹他大学哲学博士(市场营销学)学位,1997-2009年任香港城市大学商学院市场营销学系代系主任/系主任,2008年被聘为武汉大学长江学者讲座教授,是教育部“长江学者奖励计划”自1998年启动以来十年间企业管理学科唯一的被聘教授。 在加拿大及香港主持超过30项学术研究项目,包括中国国家自然科学基金委员会及香港研究资助局(NSFC-RGC)联合资助计划管理科学组别2003-2004年度唯一获资助的项目。据Journal of Global Marketing 2000年统计,在1978–1998 年期间以英文出版的国际性主要学术期刊上发表的关于中国营销的论文的作者中,周南教授发表的文章总数排名第三;据SSCI统计,其在1996-1998年间的论文被引用次数排名第四;据Journal of Advertising 2008年统计,在1997–2006十年期间在美国三个最顶尖的广告学术期刊上发表的论文与作者中,周南教授发表的论文总数排名前二十。周南是是多所大学的客座教授,营销科学学报编委会委员,中国市场学会理事会常务理事,中国高校市场学研究会常务理事,香港研究资助局人文学、社会科学及商科学科组成员 (2006-2008)。五十一岁时第一次参加马拉松全程比赛并顺利跑完,现任香港城市大学越野长跑队名誉领队。周南教授认为,改革开放30年来我们对西方营销理论和实践已有一定了解。如果只是继续简单地移植和改用西方营销理论,舍本逐末,不但永远赶不上西方,而且还会丢失中华民族的文化精华。我们应该依据“古为今用,洋为中用,中西合璧”的原则,融天、地、人三道,将以儒释道三家为主的中国文化精髓和《易经》的世界观和方法论与现代西方营销研究接轨。 把“天人合一、和谐发展”的中国文化价值观融入营销理论和实践并帮助人类创造更美好的生活将是今后中国营销学界对国际营销理论和实践发展的最大贡献。
