Biography

Dr Senetakis joined City University of Hong Kong in December 2016. Prior to joining City University as an academic, Dr Senetakis worked for two years as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at City University of Hong Kong (2011-2013) and three years as a Lecturer at Thammasat University Thailand (2013-2014) and UNSW Australia (2014-2016). He holds a 5-year required Diploma in Civil Engineering and he completed his MSc in Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics in 2006 and PhD in Soil Dynamics in 2011 at the University of Thessaloniki Greece. His PhD research received award of "Excellent with Distinction". Dr Senetakis research interests focus in the fields of experimental soil mechanics and dynamics, experimental micromechanics and tribology of non-conforming surfaces, geo-synthetics and recycled aggregates in geotechnics. During his appointment as a Post-Doctoral Fellow, Dr Senetakis contributed to the development of the first micromechanical apparatus of its type which allowed the quantification of both stiffness and friction at the contacts of sand grains and he quantified for the first time surface damage of real soil grains capturing the shearing path of small size sand particles. Dr Senetakis is currently in charge of the Soil Mechanics Laboratory of City University of Hong Kong which is one of the most advanced and well-equipped laboratories internationally for grain scale and element testing. Dr Senetakis has published over 40 international journal papers including more than 30 SCI journal papers. He is a selected reviewer of more than 20 international journals as well as technical committee member of international conferences. He is Editorial Board Member and Guest Lead Editor for a special issue on micromechanics for the journal Geomechanics and Geophysics for Geo-Energy and Geo-Resources. Dr Senetakis received a GRF grant (2018-2020) entitled "A laboratory study of soil creep and strain-rate effects of sands and aggregates at the micro-scale".
