Biography

Dr. Jijian Xu received his B.S. and Ph.D. degree from Zhejiang University (ZJU) in 2014 and 2019, respectively. After three years as a postdoc with Prof. Chunsheng Wang, he was promoted as an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Maryland (UMD). He joined City University of Hong Kong and set up his research group in 2023 (https://jijianxu.com/).

Dr. Xu's research interests focus on developing advanced electrolytes and novel electrode materials for high-energy batteries. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed papers in Nature, Science, Nature Energy, Nature Reviews Chemistry,Nature Synthesis, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Sustainability, Joule, Advanced Materials (6), etc. with a total citation over 7000 times and an H-index of 37 (google scholar). Dr. Xu is a guest editor of Energy Storage Materials, editorial board member of Science Bulletin & 科学通报, and youth editorial board member of ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Nano-Micro Letters, eScience, Materials Futures, Materals Today Energy etc. He has obtained over 10 Chinese and PCT patents, two of which were granted to related companies for commercialization. He acts as a regular reviewer for more than 30 prestigious journals such as Nature, Nature Energy, Nature Chemistry, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Sustainability, Nature Communications, Joule, Advanced Materials.  Dr. XU received the Croucher Innovation Awards 2025, “Elite Youth” Award of Chinese Chemical Society,  Materials Today Rising Star Award, Advanced Science “Rising Stars”, RSC JMCA Emerging Investigator, and Battery Division Postdoctoral Associate Research Award from the Electrochemical Society. 

Position(s) Available

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Program: 

The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$331,200 (approximately US$42,460) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 (approximately US$1,760) per year for each awardee for a period up to three years.

Students with strong academic backgrounds in science and engineering (GPA ≥ 90/100), good English communication ability (TOFEL ≥ 100, IELTS Band 7 or above) and strong interests in energy research are welcomed to contact Prof. Xu ([email protected]) with CV for further information.

PhD students (2-3 positions annually):

We welcome worldwide applications from motivated students with strong interests in chemical/ materials/energy science & engineering (GPA ≥ 85/100, English requirement: TOFEL ≥ 79, IELTS ≥ 6.5). Highly competitive salary (HK$19,100 per month) and benefit will be provided.

RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme:

The PDFS provides support to 60 awardees for a period of 36 months in terms of full-time appointment as a postdoctoral fellow (PdF) at a UGC-funded university in each round of the yearly exercise. For each awardee, the supporting university will receive an annual stipend of HK$420,090 per year for the awardee’s basic salary as well as a conference and research-related travel allowance (of HK$13,350 per year inclusively).
