Biography

Dr Ioannis Magouras joined City University of Hong Kong in June 2018 as an Assistant Professor in Food Safety/Veterinary Public Health in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health.

He holds a veterinary degree from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest and completed a PhD in veterinary virology at the University of Bern in Switzerland, where he investigated some of the mechanisms by which the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) evades the innate immune system. He has also worked as a clinical microbiologist at the Institute for Infectious Diseases in Bern, where he gained extensive knowledge of the laboratory diagnosis and the epidemiology of viral diseases in humans.

In his last position at the Veterinary Public Health Institute (University of Bern), he led projects investigating the epidemiology of Q fever in animals and humans, the effectiveness and importance of on-farm biosecurity measures and antimicrobial usage and resistance in livestock. He has also been involved in projects evaluating national disease control programs and has applied veterinary epidemiology methods for decision-making and policy development in regulatory (state) veterinary practice.

Research Interests/Areas

Currently he focuses his research career on the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance in animals, humans and the environment. He is also interested in studying other infectious diseases (in particular zoonoses), through the combination of field epidemiology, molecular methodologies, modelling and social sciences, within the One Health concept.

Ioannis has extensive teaching experience at both under- and postgraduate level, and has received training in didactics, including an official certification in problem-based learning (PBL). He has taught subjects such as zoonotic diseases, infectious disease modelling, risk analysis in veterinary medicine, evidence-based medicine and disease outbreak investigations.

He is a passionate runner, diver and wildlife photographer.
