Professor Hok Yin CHAN (陳學然) specializes in the intellectual history of the Republic of China, with particular emphasis on Zhang Taiyan, Neo-Confucianism, and the May Fourth Movement. In recent years, he has also delved into Hong Kong history. He serves as a core member of The Research Programme for Lingnan Culture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (https://www.cuhk.edu.hk/ics/lingnan/lingnan-culture-and-the-world/index.html) and co-edits the Chinese Culture: Connectivity, Globality, and Modernity book series published by Springer.  He holds a Visiting Scholar appointment at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, Harvard University (2025–2026; https://fairbank.fas.harvard.edu/person/hok-yin-chan/ ). Previously, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies  and a  Foreigner Researcher at the Department of Area Studies, The University of Tokyo. His academic publications include To Build a New China: Zhang Taiyan and the May Fourth Generation (2019), Cultural Hong Kong: A Century of Urban Flux (2024), and Sino-British Relations and Colonial Governance: Sir Cecil Clementi in Hong Kong, 1925–1930 (2024, co-authored). In 2015, his book May Fourth in Hong Kong: Colonialism, Nationalism, and Localism (2014) won the Hong Kong Book Prize. 

Professor CHAN was appointed by the Research Grants Council (RGC) as a member of the Humanities Panel for the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2026. In addition, he has been serving as a member of the 11th Council of the China Folk Literature and Art Association in Beijing since July 2026. Professor Chan’s research activities focus on intellectual history of late imperial China, with particular emphasis on Zhang Tai Yan, Neo-Confucianism and May Fourth Movement as well as Hong Kong History in recent years.
