Biography

Professor Hok Yin CHAN (陳學然) specializes in the intellectual history of the Republic of China, with particular emphasis on Zhang Taiyan, Neo-Confucianism, and the May Fourth Movement. In recent years, he has also delved into Hong Kong history. He serves as a core member of The Research Programme for Lingnan Culture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (https://www.cuhk.edu.hk/ics/lingnan/lingnan-culture-and-the-world/index.html) and co-edits the Chinese Culture: Connectivity, Globality, and Modernity book series published by Springer. His academic publications include To Build a New China: Zhang Taiyan and the May Fourth Generation (2019), Cultural Hong Kong: A Century of Urban Flux (2024), and Sino-British Relations and Colonial Governance: Sir Cecil Clementi in Hong Kong, 1925–1930 (2024, co-authored). In 2015, his book May Fourth in Hong Kong: Colonialism, Nationalism, and Localism (2014) won the Hong Kong Book Prize.

Professor Chan’s research activities focus on intellectual history of late imperial China, with particular emphasis on Zhang Tai Yan, Neo-Confucianism and May Fourth Movement as well as Hong Kong History in recent years.
