Biography

Prof. Angus H.L. Yip joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and School of Energy and Environmental Science (SEE) at CityU as a Professor in 2021. He is also the associate director of Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy (HKICE). He started his academic career as a Professor in the State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices (SKLLMD) and the School of Materials Science and Engineering at South China University of Technology (SCUT), Guangzhou, in 2013. Since 2017, he also served as the director of the Innovation Center for Printed Organic Photovoltaics in the South China Institute of Collaborative Innovation, Dongguan, which aim is to promote technology transfer and commercialization of new photovoltaic technologies. He got his BSc and MPhil degrees in Materials Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and completed his PhD degree in MSE in 2008 at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Research

Prof. Yip’s research is in the general area of solution processed optoelectronic materials and devices for energy generation and energy saving. His research focuses on understanding the structure-property relationships, device physics and photophysics, and device optimization of 1) organic solar cells, 2) perovskite solar cells and 3) perovskite LEDs. His research group is highly interdisciplinary, with research scientists, post-docs and students coming from various backgrounds including materials science, environmental science, physics, chemistry and engineering. He has published more than 330 papers in top journals including Nature , Science, Nat. Photonics, Nat. Electronics, Nat. Commun., Chem. Rev., Adv. Mater., J Am. Chem. Soc., Joule, etc, with total number of citations ~38000 and a H-index of 111 (updated to Jun 2025). He has been named 11 times consecutively as the “Highly Cited Researchers” from 2014-2024. In addition to fundamental research, he also dedicated a significant amount of effort to promote translational research, targeting for the commercialization of new generation of solar cell technology.

Prof. Yip’s research group is seeking highly motivated graduates and postdoc candidates who have solid backgrounds in Environmental Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or other related fields. The research group provides opportunities to all members to explore their interests and be involved in both fundamental research and technology translation in the energy field. Interested applicants with strong motivation to perform cutting-edge research are highly encouraged to join Prof. Yip’s research group. Qualified candidates are welcome to submit their applications with CV and copies of transcripts via email to Prof. Yip.
