Biography

Dr. Chan received his Ph.D. in integrated optics in the Electronic Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1991. Then, he joins the Department of Electrical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong, where he is currently an Associate Professor.

Dr. Chan is currently the Major Leader of B.Eng. in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (former Electronic and Communication Engineering). He has been heavily involved in teaching and student matters for many years. In 1993, the students in the Department voted him one of the best teachers. Dr. Chan got the Outstanding Teacher Awards of the Department 19 times from 1999-to 2020. The criteria for getting the awards are based on students' nominations, the teaching evaluations, and the portfolio of the staff. He is recognized as a committed and enthusiastic teacher by his Department.

Dr. Chan is currently an Optoelectronic, Electronics, Power, Nanotechnology, and Biosystems Team member. His research interest covers integrated optical devices, waveguide materials and processing, photonic and electronic packaging, reliability & failure analysis, and THz devices & transmission. He has jointly investigated over 50 externally and internally funded research projects. He is the principal investigator of over 20 projects. Dr. Chan has published more than 200 papers in international journals and conferences and has held three patents (co-owned). His total citations > 2400, h-index is 28 and i10-index is 74. He is a member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Dr. Chan served as a paper reviewer in internationally reputable journals, an invited speaker and technical committee member, and external and internal Ph.D., and Mphil thesis examiner.
