Biography

Dr. Guangyu Zhu obtained his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Peking University (2002) under the guidance of Prof. LAI Luhua, where he developed a strong passion for biological chemistry and drug discovery. He moved to the United States and obtained a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh (2007) with Prof. Billy W. Day, where he was working on anticancer drug development and discovery. He subsequently did his postdoc at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with Prof. Stephen J. Lippard working on the mechanism of action of cisplatin, one of the most widely used chemotherapeutic drugs in the clinic. He joined the City University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor in 2011. Dr. Zhu's research interest lies at the interface of chemistry and biology, in the study of the mechanisms of anticancer drugs especially DNA-damaging agents and the development of innovative anticancer agents. His future research will focus on DNA damage response and repair pathways, transcription inhibition, and DNA-protein interaction, by using interdisciplinary approaches and methods in the areas of biological chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and chemical biology.

Position(s) Available

Undergraduates

Please contact Dr. Zhu directly for research and FYP opportunities.

Research Assistants (RAs) and PhD Studentships

Research Assistant positions and PhD studentships are available immediately. Interested applicants should preferably have a Master’s degree with strong research background and publication record in one of the following areas: synthesis of organic molecules or metal-based compounds; drug delivery using nanomaterials; DNA damage repair; or another area related to Dr. Zhu’s research. Applicants should have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and a good command of English, both oral and written. The successful candidate for Research Assistant is encouraged to pursue a PhD degree after one year of working on the project. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Please send your CV (including GPA, grade of English test, publication list, and contact information of three references) and a one-page statement of your research experience to Dr. Zhu.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowships
