Biography

Dangyuan LEI is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Deputy Director of the Centre for Functional Photonics at the City University of Hong Kong, and was the Provost's Visiting Professor of Physics at Imperial College London. He received his BSc, MPhil and PhD degrees all in Physics from Northwest University (National Physics Talent Training Base), The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Imperial College London in 2005, 2007 and 2011, respectively.

His research interest centers on the nanoscale and quantum photonics and ultrafast nonlinear optical spectroscopy of low-dimensional quantum photonic materials, with particular interest in the nanoscale cavity-enhanced light-matter interaction physics and applications in miniaturized optoelectronics, sensing, imaging, energy conversion and saving. He has published 270 journal papers, given 1 plenary talk, 10 keynote speeches and 130 invited talks, and received 16000 citations and an h-index of 73. His work on multiphoton-pumped, ultralow-threshold perovskite lasing was selected as one of the Top 50 Most Read Nature Communications Articles of 2020 in Physics, and his co-invention of a smart radiative cooling coating was highlighted as “Editor’s Choice” of Science (2020) and its applications in the thermal management of green buildings and skin electronics received two Gold Medals from the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (2022 & 2023).

He is the recipient of many honors and awards, including:

Currently, he is in charge of the Hong Kong Office of Light: Science & Applications and serves Nanophotonics, Advanced Photonics Nexus and Frontiers in Photonics as Associate Editor.

雷黨願,香港城市大學材料科學及工程學系教授,香港青年科學院院士,國家自然科學基金委“優秀青年科學基金(港澳)”獲得者,倫敦帝國理工學院教務長訪問教授。2005年從西北大學物理學系獲得學士學位,2007年在香港中文大學物理學系獲得碩士學位,2011年從倫敦帝國理工學院物理學系獲得博士學位,隨後留校從事博士後研究工作。2012年9月加入香港理工大學應用物理學系任助理教授,2019年1月加入香港城市大學任副教授,獲終身教職,隨後於2023年7月晉升為教授。

他長期從事納米尺度量子光子學及低維量子材料的超快非線性光譜研究,特別關注納腔增強的光與物質相互作用物理及在能量轉換、光電子器件以及生物光子學方面的器件應用。迄今共發表學術論文260篇,其中130多篇文章影響因子大於10,谷歌學術總引用16000次,h-index是73。他的多光子泵浦、超低閾值量子點激光研究入選自然•通訊雜志2020年物理領域閱讀量最高的50篇文章;他與合作者共同發明的智能輻射制冷塗層被科學雜志作為編輯精選進行報道,其在綠色建築和電子器件熱管理方面的應用獲得兩項日內瓦國際發明展金獎。

雷教授曾獲得國家港澳優秀青年科學基金、山西省科學與技術二等獎,香港城市大學青年學者傑出研究獎、香港高等研究院材料科學明日之星稱號、亞太經合組織創新、研究和教育科學獎香港唯一被提名人、倫敦帝國理工學院校長獎學金和安妮•索恩博士論文獎,納米研究雜誌青年創新獎、英國皇家學會國際交流獎和深圳市科技創新委員會國家級科技項目先進個人,三次入選斯坦福大學發布的全球前2%頂尖科學家榜單,並入選ScholarGPS2025年世界前0.5%高被引學者。

PhD student positions:

CityU admits PhD students centrally through the School of Graduate Studies and the admission evaluation is highly based on an applicant's GPA and publication record. Exceptional candidates may be admitted through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) that offers a more competitive scholarship package. HKPFS applications are open for one round per year (deadline: December 1st).

Financial support for PhD students:
CityU PhD studentship offers a stipend of $HKD 18,000 per month (12 months per year) to all successful PhD applicants. Outstanding academic performance can qualify for additional tuition scholarship and travel fund to attend interantional conferences.

English proficiency requirements:

  • a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based); or
  • a minimum overall band score of 6.5 in IELTS;
