Biography
Dr. Wai-Sum Lee is the Coordinator of the Phonetics Laboratory of the Department of Linguistics and Translation at the City University of Hong Kong. Her main research interest is in Chinese phonetics. She has carried out research projects on acoustics, articulation, and perception of the sounds of the Chinese dialects, namely Cantonese, Beijing Mandarin, and Hakka.
Dr. Lee has been serving as a member of the Council of the International Phonetic Association (IPA) since 2011 and the Editorial Board for the Journal of the International Phonetic Association since 2008. She is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Phonetic Association of China (PAC) and the Editorial Board for the Chinese Journal of Phonetics, an official publication of the PAC. From 2014 to 2021, she was the Vice-President of the PAC.
Dr. Lee co-chaired the Organizing Committee for the 17th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS-2011) in 2011 and convened the International Conference on Phonetics of the Languages in China (ICPLC-2013) in 2013. She was the editor of the Proceedings of ICPhS-2011 and Proceedings of ICPLC-2013. She has served as a reviewer for a number of phonetics/linguistics journals, namely Journal of Phonetics, Journal of the International Phonetic Association, Speech Communication, Clincial Linguistics and Phonetics, Linguistics and Language, Lingua, and Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.
