Biography

Prof. Tso currently serves as an Associate Dean (Internationalisation and Outreach) and Associate Professor at the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (1st class), MPhil degree in Environmental Engineering and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2010, 2012 and 2015, respectively. In 2014, he was honored with the Fulbright – Research Grant Council (RGC) Hong Kong Research Fellowship, during which he conducted research at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley). Upon his return from UC Berkeley, Prof. Tso held the position of Research Associate at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at HKUST from 2015 to 2016. He was then promoted to the role of Research Assistant Professor from 2016 to 2018. During his time at HKUST, Prof. Tso also served as a Junior Fellow at the HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study from 2016 to 2018. In September 2018, Prof. Tso transitioned to CityUHK as an Assistant Professor and was swiftly promoted to Associate Professor in 2023, achieving early promotion. Since June 2024, Prof. Tso has assumed the role of Associate Dean (Internationalisation and Outreach) at the School of Energy and Environment at CityUHK. Additionally, in 2024, he was recognized as an RGC Research Fellow.

Prof. Tso’s research is centered on advancing the understanding of heat transfer, energy conversion, and engineered materials. His approach involves a fusion of theoretical insights and experimental
investigations to develop groundbreaking solutions that enhance building thermal management, indoor built environments, space cooling, refrigeration, micro-droplet manipulation, and energy efficient building technologies. Through his work, he aims to make a substantial global impact by tackling critical challenges in the world. Currently, Prof. Tso leads a diverse research team comprising 13 PhD students, 18 postdoctoral researchers, and 1 research assistant. Under his guidance, 5 PhD students have successfully graduated, and 15+ postdocs and research assistants have received training. His research endeavors have received substantial external funding through competitive grants and gained notable recognition within the international research community. Prof. Tso boasts an impressive publication record, with over 90 journal papers and 40 conference
papers to his credit. Of particular significance are his contributions to prestigious publications, such as Science, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Advanced Science, and Advanced Functional Materials, among others. Notably, a publication in Science attracted substantial attention, leading to coverage by nearly 40 local and international media outlets. Furthermore, Prof. Tso ranks among the Top 2% of the world's most highly cited scientists in Mechanical Engineering since 2020, a remarkable achievement for a young faculty member that underscores the global recognition of his research efforts. He has successfully secured 28 projects as PI/PC, totalling over HK$85 million in funding since 2017. These projects encompass a wide spectrum from fundamental research (e.g., GRF/ECS) to applied research (e.g., ITF), as well as consultancy and contract research initiatives. Noteworthy is Prof. Tso's exceptional success rate in securing grants, with 5 out of 7 GRF projects approved, along with an ECS grant from the RGC, representing an impressive success rate of approximately 70% (compared to the average Hong Kong success rate of 33%). Additionally, he has consecutively received 5 ITF projects from 2019 to 2023. Recently, Prof. Tso obtained funding through the RAISe+ Scheme exceeding HK$55 million and was honored as an RGC Research Fellow under the RGC Research Fellow Scheme (RFS) for 2024/25. These funding accolades underscore his robust independent research acumen.

In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Tso has demonstrated a strong commitment to translational research by filing a total of 17 patents, including 8 US patents, 6 Chinese patents, and 3 Hong Kong patents. This substantial effort underscores his dedication to advancing research outcomes towards commercialization, bridging the gap between theoretical studies and practical applications, as well as fostering entrepreneurship. In pursuit of these objectives, Prof. Tso founded a startup company called i2Cool Limited, which is focused on passive radiative cooling technology. The venture has attracted over HK$140 million in investments to date. The flagship product of i2Cool Limited, known as iPaint, has garnered interest from various local and international entities, demonstrating the successful transfer of knowledge from academic research to tangible applications. This impact is evident in the product's utilization and its contribution to society at large.

Prof. Tso's influence transcends the boundaries of academia. One of his PhD graduates, Dr. Martin Zhu, has recently been appointed as a non-official member of The Green Technology and Finance Development Committee, operating under the chairmanship of the Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr. Paul Chan. Furthermore, Prof. Tso holds memberships in several prestigious professional organizations, including The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (MHKIE), The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (MCIBSE), The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE), The American Society of Mechanical Engineers
(MASME). He is also recognized as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a Registered Professional Engineer (PRE). These affiliations underscore his standing and involvement within the engineering
community and his dedication to professional development and standards.
