Description of impact

Exactly 5 years after the fire that partially ravaged the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris, the Cultural Exchange Oasis of CityU, in collaboration with Alliance Française de Hong Kong, unveiled (Re)births, a spectacular multimedia exhibition on the construction and successive restorations of one of the most iconic symbols of France throughout the centuries.

(Re)births presents the history of Notre-Dame through various mediums, including a 3D model, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), videos, photographs, and unique architectural exploratory works designed by CityU’s students. From its origins to the ongoing renovation efforts, the exhibition aims to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and cherishing such historically significant architectural landmarks. Come and discover the cathedral, which has stood as a symbol of France for centuries.

The models and drawings on display are the works of the course “Digital Design and Construction Project”, supervised by Prof. Hao Zheng, from the students in the Master of Science in Construction Management program. This course explores specific form-finding and modularization strategies in digital design and construction, utilizing physical and digital modeling techniques, but focusing more on the relationship between the form and generative logic. As the project topic states, “the redesign and reconstruction of the spire of Notre Dame De Paris”, the students re-designed the spire of the Notre Dame De Paris using digital design and construction techniques.
