DescriptionBy every metric, Eng was a pioneer: Billed as the first female Chinese director in both America and China, she seemingly navigated the boundaries of culture, language, gender and sexuality with ease. Eng charmed media and collaborators, gaining a fandom despite being unique in her androgynous appearance and identity as a lesbian. And her output was prolific, directing nine films in just over a decade between 1937 and 1949, all in the face of mounting geopolitical conflict.
