CityU achieves major breakthrough in developing new super alloys

A research team led by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has worked out a novel strategy for developing new super alloys that are extremely strong, yet ductile and flexible. The breakthrough solution addresses a daunting, decades-long dilemma in materials science.

The cutting-edge research was published in the latest issue of the prestigious journal Science, in an article titled “Multicomponent intermetallic nanoparticles and superb mechanical behaviors of complex alloys”.

Description香港城市大學科研隊伍最近成功製造出高強度、高韌性的新型「高熵合金」,結合了五種金屬元素並使用納米顆粒技術,令合金在堅固5倍同時延展性亦提高1.5倍,突破材料科學界數十年來金屬強度與韌性不可兼得的瓶頸。同時,團隊還發現新的合成合金策略,能夠分別於極低溫及極高溫狀態下均保持優異性能,為有關新型超低溫設備,以及飛機和航空等高溫系統的研發奠基。

該項新型合金研究由中國工程院外籍院士、香港城市大學材料科學及工程學系大學傑出教授劉錦川領導,該系高級副研究員楊濤、機械工程學系講座教授開執中,連同城大、香港理工大學、北京工業大學、中南大學及中國科學院金屬研究所多名學者及研究人員參與其中。相關成果已於最新一期的頂尖學術期刊《科學》發表,題目為《多組元金屬間納米顆粒和複合合金的優越機械性能》。
