Description

The first 10 elements in the periodic table 🧪 are 氫氦鋰鈹硼碳氮氧氟氖 in Chinese. Don’t these characters look alike? It seems not easy 🤯 to recognise these Chinese Chemistry terms. Arts students may encounter similar obstacles when studying Chinese history ⏳ using English (the upper secondary and university history curricula usually cover both Chinese and western history). It’s hard to remember the spelling of the historical figures’ name, and understand incidents and systems ⚙️ in Chinese history in English. If learning Chinese history in English is demanding for those who have Chinese cultural background, how hard it would be for those having limited knowledge in Chinese language and culture, such as the considerable number of ethnic minority students in Hong Kong? This subject, compulsory to all junior secondary students, not only poses difficulties to non-Chinese speaking students, but also to their teachers as it’s challenging to translate the terms and provide understandable explanations 👩‍🏫.
Invited by the Hong Kong Education Bureau, CityU’s Department of Chinese and History has developed a glossary 🔤📖 of over 2430 key terms about Chinese history, including incidents, figures👲, systems, places🌎, philosophical beliefs, and more. It was made available for teachers and students to download recently. The terms are sorted in the order of nine historical periods throughout Chinese history. Users can look up the period from which a particular term was originated from the index first, before finding out the translation in the corresponding sheet. Some terms come with English explanations. For instance, the term 六藝 is literally translated as “Six Arts”, and the explanations would inform users that it means the six skills that the gentlemen in the Zhou Dynasty were expected to have, including rites🙇, music🪕, archery🏹, charioteering, calligraphy and mathematics🧮. The term 科舉制is translated as “civil-service examination system” in the glossary, and the explanation provides further information that it was established during the Sui-Tang periods and abolished in the late-Qing period.
For details about the glossary, please read the article at the College website 👉https://bit.ly/cityu-Chinese-History-glossary. To download the glossary, please go to 👉https://bit.ly/3Aofl3E. Why don’t give it a try by finding out when were the terms “perpendicular confederacy” and “Battle of Red Cliffs“ originated, and their Chinese translation and explanations? Let’s go!
